Jo, the enigma returns
January 1st, 2010
It always strikes me as strange when a striker enjoys success at a club like CSKA Moscow, but can't seem to replicate it in a different league. A goalscorer surely can score goals in any team in any league.
Hughes was impressed by Jo's record and paid what, £18 million for him? He came, played, and scored. Once and once only. He was loaned to Everton where he immediately started scoring again, then again, the goals dried up.
It now looks as though the unhappy Brazilian will be returned to City in January, events appear to be heading in that direction, and with City having so many strikers, it's unlikely he will be called upon to play for us.
Corinthians
Born in São Paulo, Jô played for Brazilian side Corinthians during the years of 2003–2005. He made 54 appearances scoring 23 goals. In 2005 he was transferred to Russian club CSKA Moscow.
CSKA Moscow
Jô scored 14 goals in his first 18 appearances for CSKA Moscow. In the UEFA Champions League, Jo scored two goals in the matches against Inter Milan, one being in the dramatic 4-2 loss at the San Siro. Altogether Jô appeared in over 70 games for CSKA Moscow and in 5 Champions League games.
Manchester City
On July 3, 2008, Manchester City signed Jô for an undisclosed amount thought to be in the region of £18 million.[1] He has since scored one goal in 9 games. Jo found it difficult to establish himself in the City team and featured in just 6 games at the start of the 2008-09 season.
Everton
Jô joined Everton on loan in February 2009, until the end of the 2008–09 season. He made his debut at Goodison Park against Bolton Wanderers, scoring twice in a 3–0 win. He finished the season with five goals from twelve league appearances, though missed out on Everton’s run to the 2009 FA Cup Final as he was cup-tied after playing the last 20 minutes of Manchester City's third round defeat to Nottingham Forest.
He returned to Manchester City at the end of the season, but re-joined Everton on a season-long loan for 2009–10 with the option of a permanent move at the end of that period. His first competitive goal in the loan spell was scored against AEK Athens in a Europa League group game, which Everton went on to win 4-0. He is currently suspended after returning to Brazil without permission.
Wikipedia
The forums are merciless in their condemnation of players, and Jo has been buried time and again by the fans, but we now know that Bob the Manc won't dismiss a player until he has had a good look at him, and maybe the system that City are adopting now may suit Jo, who knows.
CSKA are reported in the papers to be interested in taking the player back, "ending his nightmare" but I don't think we should be too hasty. He was pretty terrible under Hughes, but Mancini may work his magic on him. I hope so, but I'm probably the only one who does.
Bojinov and Hart are both doing well and look like continuing their loan deals, I think Jo may yet get another chance especially if Adebayor continues being a pain. We'll see after the African Nations well-timed cup.
Just a thought!
