Wonderful, wonderful, Copenhagen
February 19th, 2009Tonight's Uefa cup tie in Copenhagen gives City a chance to redeem themselves after last weekend's debacle. It is a test of our determination to progress in the competition, something Mark Hughes has referred to time and again since his appointment
Bouyed by the return of Shaun Wright-Phillips and captain Richard Dunne, Hughes has called on his team to lay the ghost of failure away from home, and finally make a mark in Eorope with an eye-catching performance. His January signings have experience of international games, and new boy Shay Given is confident of success.
The Danish side's manager has been trying to twist a knife in Hughes's side all week, alternately accusing him of being the dark destroyer of football, and showing sympathy for his plight. Why he should believe Hughes will take the slightest notice of what he says is beyond me, unless it's simply self-publicity for a bit of a no-mark (Haha! pun) which is harmless, I suppose.
Here is an interesting look at FC Copenhagen, which I have shamelessly lifted from everything2.com
Current star players are Swedish internationals Tobias
Linderoth, and Marcus Allbäck, Brazilian Álvaro Santos
Danish internationals Michael Gravgaard and Jesper Christiansen.
The coach is Norwegian Ståle Solbakken.Regular danish league champions, From the start, F.C.Copenhagen has been an ambitious club that has modelled itself on the elite European clubs, such as Real Madrid, AC Milan or Bayern Munich, and the players' home kit is All White like Real's. Though it is often mocked domestically for its lofty aspirations, the club has become one of the Europe-wide soundest economic enterprises in the volatile world of professional soccer, and though the club has yet to join the most prestigeous football tournament, the Champions League, it is creating a steady profit of between three and ten million dollars a year.
Tonight in the Danish capital futures may be settled, as progress in this competition is no longer something to be desired, it's essential or our season is over.
